Shaq is the fucking man, period. From the moment he was drafted to Orlando, you knew this 7-foot monster brought something to the NBA that had never been seen before. From breaking backboards, releasing rap albums (one featuring The Notorious B.I.G.), starring in classic films such as Blue Chips & Kazaam, accompanying Hulk Hogan to the ring for his debut match in WCW against Ric Flair (I was there, no big deal), winning 4 championship rings, to later in his career basically hand picking which team he wanted to play for, Shaq did what he wanted and nobody was gonna tell him differently.
Unfortunately, after 19 years in the NBA, the newly named “Big AARP” announced his retirement. I personally am saddened by this news, because we don’t get to see him dwarf basically every player in the NBA that he stands beside anymore, or watch him gallop down the course like a big minotaur.
The announcement of his retirement also excites me very much because this means we finally get what I have been saying he needed to do for YEARS: commentate. Now, obviously he isn’t going to be joining Marv Albert and Reggie Miller on the sidelines calling the games anytime soon, but how far off is it to think that Shaq is going to be sitting across from Charles Barkley on TNT next season? Think of the TV gold that would be, and the control room nightmare for the bleep button. Maybe we can finally get some explanation for this EPIC fight…
Anyway, I didn’t write this blog to give a run-down of his career or anything, but just to say Thanks Shaq, you’re the man, I forgive you for leaving Orlando after getting swept by the Rockets, and you proved time-and-time again truly can’t stop and won’t ever stop the reign.
